The Dartmouth Rugby team had its 2009-2010 season ended Saturday at the hands of the Syracuse University Hammerheads in the Northeast semi-finals. The 5-6 loss in the rain at West Point, NY, the first of the year for the Dartmouth side, cost the Big Green a spot in the national round of sixteen next spring.

Saturday’s 50-8 win over Boston College was a bittersweet one for the Dartmouth seniors. Consisting of only four active players and prop Matt Dricoll ’10, who is out for the fall season with a knee injury, what the group has lacked in quantity they have made up for in quality of play and leadership to guide a young Dartmouth side. Each senior knew his four year career would see its last match on Brophy field when the Big Green ran out to face the Boston College Eagles, and only a win would keep Dartmouth playing for one more week.

The forecasted rain for Saturday’s Ivy League title match in Hanover did not disappoint, pouring down buckets on the players and swamping the field. A side that had had its worst two outings of the season in adverse playing conditions, the Big Green proved quickly that it was a team that could adapt to the weather. Never out of control of the match for a moment, the Dartmouth side dominated set piece and shaped the game to slosh its way to a 53-6 victory.

Sun shown down on a blustery, cold New Hampshire day as the undefeated Big Green took on the University of Pennsylvania. Dartmouth took advantage of a few key Quaker miscues in the first half, carving out a 19-3 lead after a first half marked by Penn physicality. “We were beat up physically in the first half,” explained Dartmouth co-captain Sam Edandison ‘10. It was like men and boys…. [Dartmouth] simply didn’t make tackles and got dragged around.”
